Measuring an Iron-filled Carbon nanotube in various modes
An iron filled nanotube was first imaged with secondary electrons in scanning electron microscopy (part A). Then the same tube was placed in the hr-MFM and measured in intermittent contact mode, giving a topography image (part B). The mode was then changed to electrostatic force mode, giving different contrast to the topography image and highlighting charged areas on the sample (Part C). The tube was then measured in hr-MFM mode with opposite tip magnetizations. The sum of the two images gives a pure magnetic signal with all topographic and charge effects cancelled out (Part D)..This magnetic image agrees and compares favorably to the SEM image taken with backscattered electrons (part E).
